New trailer and release date announcement for anime RPG NEO: The World Ends With You

NEO: The World Ends With You

NEO: The World Ends With You on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation now has a release date.

The sequel to the cult hit Nintendo DS RPG is due on 27 July, with a PC version also coming in the summer.

Players control new protagonist Rindo as he uncovers the mysteries behind the “Reapers’ Game”, a life or death battle game he’s forced to take part in. Think anime The Hunger Games set in near-future Tokyo.

The game features the same striking anime visuals as its predecessor and a thumping soundtrack from composer Takeharu Ishimoto.

Square Enix has released a new trailer along with the release date announcement that introduces a whole host of the game’s characters who you’ll be chatting with and, presumably, fighting with and against in the game’s battles. Those battles play out in real time as two teams duke it out with plenty of flashy moves.

The game’s visual style is matched by a fashion system that allows you to swap out psych pins on your clothing to switch up abilities and boost character stats with your style.

The trailer also references Neku, the protagonist from the previous game, so expect some links in the narrative.

The original game, from 2007, was recognised for its innovative battle system that made use of the DS systems two screens, as well as its clothing system that had differing fashions between distinct regions of Tokyo.

It was later ported to mobile, called Solo Remix, that reworked the battles for a single screen. This version was then released on the Switch in 2018 that allowed for controller support, in addition to touchscreen controls.

For fans, this sequel has been a long time coming.
