Oscars sparks upset by leaving Jessica Walter and Naya Rivera out of ‘rushed’ in memoriam tribute
Disappointed Oscar viewers are complaining after the annual “In Memoriam” segment failed to honour beloved icons Jessica Walter and Naya Rivera.
Many were left disappointed by this year’s unusually speedy tribute, which was set to the fast-paced beat of Stevie Wonder’s “As”.
As the names flashed past the screen it was clear to see some were missing – including Walter and Rivera, both of whom passed away in the last twelve months.
Arrested Development star Walter died at the age of 80 in March, while Glee star Rivera drowned in California’s Lake Piru in July aged 33.
Both of the late actors had careers primarily on television, although Walter was a Golden Globe nominee for Play Misty for Me and had many other film roles.
To account for any omissions in the Memoriam tribute, the ceremony’s site always links to the full “In Memoriam” gallery on the Academy’s website. Walter’s name was included here, though Rivera’s was not.
Several viewers took to Twitter to complain after the segment aired, saying the “insentive” montage missed the mark.
“The In Memoriam section of the #Oscars is always rough, but how on earth did they not include Jessica Walter,” one commented
The Oscars had no host, no performances, almost no clips, shorter walk times, a rushed in memoriam and is still running over by 20+ minutes. This is so exhausting

Naya Rivera was a singer, not just an actress. She was a two time Grammy nominee. Had a career that spanned more than two decades. She died saving her son’s life.
The fact that the @RecordingAcad didn’t see fit to include her in the In Memoriam section is disgraceful. #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/75jdVgUaC7— Matthew Schmidt (@schmatacus) March 15, 2021
since the academy, along with the grammys, decided yet again not to include naya rivera in the tribute section of their 3 hour long show, we again have to do it for them.
you’re with us forever and your talent / legacy will span beyond generations. i love you. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/3wxYZntp7L— mikayla ミ☆ (@margotsnaya) April 26, 2021
