Comedian Hannah Gadsby reveals she got married in secret: ‘This is me gushing’

Hannah Gadsby has revealed that she married her partner Jenney Shamash in January this year.
The lesbian comedian, who rose to global prominence with her Netflix special Nanette, shared the happy news on Instagram on Thursday (29 April).
She wrote: “I would like to introduce all y’all to Jenney Shamash.
“She is a producer extraordinaire. She is very funny and is really talented at reciting facts. It is a joy to behold.
“We got married in January and we are very chuffed about it.
“For the record: this is me gushing. I am full of very positive feelings. This is a nice story.”
Gadsby also thanked “everybody who voted for marriage equality” in Australia in December, 2017, before adding the hashtags: “#married #really? #yeahtotally.”
According to the Star Observer, at the time of a 2017 referendum to gauge public support for same-sex marriage in Australia, Gadsy said: “I don’t want young kids to hear the kind of horrific bile I was forced to listen to.
“For many, the debate was theatre. For me, it made me hate myself so deeply I have never been able to develop an aptitude for relationships.”
Hannah Gadsby received international acclaim for her comedy show Nanette.
Hannah Gadsby rose to fame after the release of her Netflix comedy special Nanette and often uses her platform to raise awareness of autism and ADHD, both of which she has.
Nanette was autobiographical, chronicling her awkward experiences as a gay woman throughout her years, and won international acclaim.
The show was focused on the concept of Gadsby quitting comedy – a plan which the comic has long since abandoned. She says in the show: “I built a career on self deprecating humour, and I don’t want to do that any more.
“Do you know what self-deprecation means coming from somebody who exists on the margins? It’s not humility. It’s humiliation.
“I put myself down in order to speak. In order to seek permission to speak. And I simply will not do that anymore.
“Not to myself or anyone who identifies as me. And if that means that my comedy career is over, then so be it.”
Jenney Shamash, Gadsby’s new wife, worked as a producer on Douglas, Gadsby’s follow-up show to Nanette.
