Mary Poppins announces West End reopening date for 2021: this is how to get tickets
The classic musical Mary Poppins has announced its return date to London’s West End.
The show will reopen at the Prince Edward Theatre from 7 August, with tickets going back on sale soon from Ticketmaster and London Theatre Direct.
Based on the book by PL Travers about a flying nanny who swoops in to save the Banks family, the musical features songs including “A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, “Practically Perfect” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.
After an 11 year break, the musical was revived for the West End in 2019 with Zizi Strallen and Charlie Stemp starring as Mary Poppins and Bert.
The pair will return for the upcoming reopening, with the producer Cameron Mackintosh saying: “The last year has been unbelievably hard for everyone but particularly so for the Theatre profession.
“I have been moved and inspired by the resilience and camaraderie of so many practitioners from all aspects of our industry who have taken on any job so that they and their families could survive.”
Following the announcement one Twitter user joked that the show’s producer would reveal a “new reduced orchestration” to comply with social distancing rules.
They posted it alongside a picture of Dick Van Dyke in the original 1964 film as a one-man band featuring a trumpet and harmonica.

The live musical adaption is of course inspired by the Disney film starring Julie Andrews in her debut movie role as the title character.
The film was the highest-grossing of 1964 and received 13 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress.
Since then it has produced a sequel starring Emily Blunt and a biopic, Saving Mr. Banks that dramatised the pre-production difficulties of the movie.
Tickets for Mary Poppins on London’s West End will be released soon via Ticketmaster and London Theatre Direct.
Also recently announced theatre shows include Dreamgirls, which will tour across the UK for the first time from December 2021 and Wicked is returning to its West End home in September.
