Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance arrives on current consoles 20 years after initial release
Twenty years after its release, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance has been re-released for current consoles.
Originally released in 2001 for the PS2 and Xbox (and ported to Nintendo’s Gamecube later), the game is widely regarded as a hack-and-slash action classic.
It’s now available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch for £29.99, digital only.
It’s not a remake though, so beyond offering a 4K display option this is essentially the same game with the same presentation as before.
That means choosing between dwarf, human or elf and using fantastical weapons and magic to defeat hordes of gruesome and mythical creatures.
You can also play in two-player local co-op with a friend.
The game is a spin-off of the Baldur’s Gate series of RPGs, hugely popular on PC, that are set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
Dark Alliance was the first game in the series to be released on consoles. It was developed by Snowblind Studios, with a PC version planned by Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt but ultimately cancelled.
It was also the first video game to implement the third edition rules of Dungeons and Dragons.
Fans of the Baldur’s Gate series are gearing up for the full release of Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios – responsible for the Divinity: Original Sin series.
The game is currently available on Steam in early access and sees players travelling through the Forgotten Realms as a customised character from a variety of D&D classes.
On top of battling, you can also romance the companions in the game. All the characters are available to be romanced regardless of the player’s gender.
One character, Astarion, explicitly states he’s interested in men and women making him canonically bisexual, where the other characters are ‘player-sexual’.
Some characters are also polyamorous, but the player is only able to romance one.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access since October 2020, but a full release date is currently unknown.
