Original green dynamic background added to Xbox Series X/S – and the nostalgia is hitting fans hard

Xbox green dashboard

Are you feeling nostalgic for the original green Xbox dashboard?

If so, Microsoft has you covered. In the latest May update for their Xbox Series X/S a number of new dashboards have been added.

That includes “The Original”, which mimics the design of the first Xbox with its iconic green glow. Sadly there are no eerie sounds to go with it. Check out the dynamic backgrounds in the settings menu to find it.

The update also includes improvements to quick resume, passthrough audio and more, as explained on the Xbox Wire blog.

The dashboard theme was discovered by The Verge’s Tom Warren, who tweeted a video of it in action.

While the initial tweet mentions this is for Xbox Insiders, it is in fact available for all owners of the console.

Xbox fans are certainly pleased with the theme.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the original Xbox, which was released in November 2001, so perhaps this is just the beginning of a range of nostalgic throwbacks Microsoft have planned.

Or maybe it’s just a fun little nod to the origins of the Xbox.

The console launched with the first game in the Halo series, which has become something of a flagship franchise for Microsoft.

It’s fitting, then, that the latest game Halo Infinite is due out this year in November – in line with the anniversary.

Gameplay was revealed at last year’s E3, but was heavily criticised by fans for its lack of next-gen visuals.

The release date was pushed back to this year accordingly, so developer 343 Industries could make further changes. Each month they have announced new information on the game in a series of blog posts.

The latest post discusses the PC version of the game, ensuring the game is optimised for the platform.

Hopefully we can expect more Xbox nostalgia later on this year, alongside this new-old Xbox dashboard.
