Kate McKinnon shares stark warning for Trump fanatics with pitch-perfect Liz Cheney impression
Kate McKinnon joked about opposing same-sex marriage and falling down to hell “like Lil Nas X” in a pitch-perfect Liz Cheney impression on Saturday Night Live.
McKinnon’s Cheney sat down with Colin Jost on SNL‘s Weekend Update to reflect on the Republican Party’s decision to oust her from leadership – and the result was truly something to behold.
Kicking off the sketch, Jost thanked Cheney for appearing on the show. “It’s been quite a week for you,” he said.
“That’s right. I was kicked out of the Republican Party. I fell down to hell like Lil Nas X, crashed with the devil and bounced back onto MSNBC,” McKinnon’s version of Liz Cheney joked.
“Colin, the Republican Party is changing. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what I did wrong. Look at me, I am everything a conservative woman is supposed to be – blonde, mean,” she added.
“And?” Jost asked.
“I was done,” McKinnon joked.
McKinnon’s Cheney went on to explain that there are hoards of people who are prepared to stand by her, including Adam Kinzinger, Chris Wallace, her father Dick Cheney, Ann Romney, Ann’s horses, and “Colin Jost – fingers crossed!”
She continued: “Colin this is the grand implosion of Trumpism. You don’t even know the size of the tsunami that’s coming. We’re talking me, Omarosa, five white women, maybe six. Have I said me?”
Kate McKinnon’s Liz Cheney ‘opposed gay marriage’ even though her sister is a lesbian
McKinnon’s Cheney went on to admit the she has been left “high and dry” by Republicans.
“What more can I do for you people? I opposed gay marriage even though my own sister is a lez,” she said.
“Republicans, I’m trying to save you. You’re like horses who won’t leave a burning barn, you’re going to die. Accept the help. Trump lost.
“To my chagrin I voted for him, I loved him like a straight sister. But he lost, and he incited a riot and that’s the truth and I will do everything in my power to keep him from becoming president again,” Cheney said.
“Great, and what is that?” Jost asked.
“It’s gonna be me, Lisa Murkowski’s mom, Melania,” McKinnon’s Cheney joked.
The hilarious sketch came just days after Cheney, an attorney who has served as US representative for Wyoming, was removed from her position as chair of the House Republican Conference after she spoke out against Trump for inciting a riot at the Capitol in January.
Cheney made waves in the Republican Party when she voted in favour of impeaching Trump and publicly criticised the former president’s baseless claim that the election was stolen.
