Twitch star apologises for transphobic stream title: ‘I know this hurt people and that’s on me’
Twitch streamer Indy ‘SPACE’ Halpern has apologised for using a transphobic title on his stream.
SPACE, a professional Overwatch player for the Los Angeles Gladiators, has been using song lyrics for his stream titles for some time.
On 22 May, he continued the trend with a lyric from the song “That’s A Rack” by rapper Lil Uzi Vert.
“Check my DMs found out she was a man. I can’t dm never ever again,” it read.
Fans had pointed out that out of context the stream title appeared transphobic. SPACE addressed the issue on Twitter the following day.

“I want to address my stream title from last night. Those who watch my stream know I’ve been using song lyrics as my stream title for the past few months now. The title ‘check my DMs found out she was a man. I can’t dm never ever again’ was a Lil Uzi Vert lyric which I thought was about him being catfished while DMing someone.
“After the stream I became aware it was actually a transphobic lyric which was not my intention at all,” read the TwitLonger.
“I know this hurt people and that’s on me. I’m sorry to those who were hurt by this and want everyone to know this mistake isn’t a representation of me or the community I’m trying to build when I stream. I’m going to take care going forward to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
In response, the majority of fans praised the streamer for owning up to his mistake.
We are humans, we make honest mistakes. You realized it and you owned up to it. That's what matters.— Osoluna | Casino Femboy 🐰 Vtuber (@SyduckP) May 23, 2021
People are saying he doesnt have to apologize. I have no comment on that, but what I really appreciate is that he listens to his community. There are trans ppl in his community and obv they felt sum typa way bout his title and he listened.— ︎ (@Ihaosunshines) May 23, 2021
As a trans person, don't sweat it. I thought the same thing reading the lyric. Thank you for addressing it— N3bby is engaged 💍 (@whokilldn3bby) May 23, 2021
The 21 year old streamer has 101,000 followers on Twitch and mainly streams Overwatch.
Rapper Lil Uzi Vert has been called out for controversial opinions and lyrics, including lines in this particular song.
The lyric used in SPACE’s stream title is immediately followed up with: “Lucien on my vision, that’s the only thing that’s tran”.
