Video game actor Merle Dandridge to reprise her role as Marlene in HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation
The TV adaption of the popular action-adventure game The Last of Us is coming to HBO in 2022.
In a rare move, voice actor Merle Dandridge has been added to the official cast of the HBO series, which is set to debut next year. Joining Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who are set to appear as Joel and Ellie, respectively – Dandridge will reprise her role from the original 2014 video game.
As in The Last of Us, she will play Marlene, the head of the Fireflies: a resistance movement struggling for freedom against an oppressive military regime. The star-studded adaptation will be directed by several people, from Kantemir Balagov to Ali Abbas.

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic game that takes place twenty years after modern civilisation has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.
What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival. The HBO version is set to tell the same story in live action.
Back in 2020, The writer and producer of the upcoming The Last of Us HBO adaptation, Craig Mazin confirmed in a tweet that the main character Ellie will remain a lesbian, after some fans were worried the TV remake would make Ellie straight.
