Miley Cyrus was “devastated” to learn this week that one of her fans was brutally shot dead in a “homophobic” murder in Brazil.

A Twitter user alerted Cyrus to the murder in a post on Friday (25 June), which read: “Hey Miley, this is Gabriel. He was a huge fan of yours, Brazilian, and recently lost his life to brutality. Homophobia. He loved you very much.”

The tweet was accompanied by a photo of the young gay man, alongside an Instagram post written by his boyfriend, who said: “They killed him for what he is, because he is happy, because he loves, a person with a pure heart who was not mean to anyone, always reached out to help others.

“Today I had to say goodbye of the love of my life… I will love you forever and you will always be in my heart, remembering every bit of our history. Stop us killing, I JUST ASK FOR JUSTICE.”

Cyrus shared the post, and wrote: “I am devastated to find out a smiler has brutally lost their life due to hate, judgment, and injustice!

“To call this disturbing action ‘homophobia’ would mean that the attacker had a ‘fear of’ queer people. Which is f**king bulls**t. This humans heart was full of HATE and ANGER.”

She added in further tweets: “This is exactly why the importance of my mission to fight against this type of cruelty with love, acceptance, and FREEDOM is at the very top of my priorities and is the purpose of my existence on this planet.

“I couldn’t imagine if this happened to one of my best friends and knowing this happened to someone that loved me and I love in return breaks my heart! #WeWontLetThemWin.”

According to Globo1, 22-year-old Gabriel Garcia was murdered in a barbershop in Embu das Artes, a city near São Paulo, Brazil, on Monday (23 June).

He was sitting in a chair waiting to have his hair cut when, at around 6pm, a hooded man burst into the barbershop and shot him in the head at least three times, before fleeing the scene.

The killer has not yet been identified by police, who are investigating his death as a homicide, and Garcia’s family believe that the crime was motivated by homophobia.
