Australian actor Hugh Sheridan came out as non-binary in an emotional Instagram post with their fiancé Kurt Roberts.

Sheridan came out while celebrating their new cover shoot with DNA magazine.

In the caption for the Instagram post, they explained that they were “honoured” to share the cover with Roberts, and “given that it is Pride month”, they understand why DNA “chose love other another pic of a guy with a towel”.

“And FYI,” Sheridan added, “I AM still a human (non-binary/bi/me/Hughman),” referring to their stage show, Hughman.

“But I’m in a monogamous relationship with another human, who I love,” Sheridan continued.

“I don’t accept a label ’cause it limits me… if you want it; take it. I chose zero labels for no other reason except the exclusion, limitations, separation, I believe are all one, deeeeep down.”

Sheridan ended the post with a powerful sentiment: “Be you. Be true. Be free: to BE, to just BE… you, a human, same as me.”

Hugh Sheridan opened up about their sexuality in 2020

The Packed to the Rafters star previously came out as someone who experiences attraction to more than one gender in an essay for Stellar Magazine.

In the essay, Sheridan wrote: “I’ve never felt I really knew who I was and I didn’t like the sounds of the labels that people were giving me so I decided to say nothing.

“But lockdown gave me time to reflect and it occurred to me that no-one ever sticks up for people who don’t pick a label.”

They admitted that they had been advised earlier in their career to hide their sexuality.

“Figuring out that I connected with the same sex the way I did the opposite sex was almost a relief, so that advice was confusing,” they wrote.

“The way it was explained to me was that women wouldn’t want to pay to see a movie or TV show if they knew they couldn’t have sex with the leading man. And it made me angry.”

Sheridan proposed to their now-fiancé Kurt Roberts in March, during a performance of their show Hughman at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

They told DNA: “I went out and bought a ring and flew his family to be seated in the audience on the night. He had no idea. It was a really amazing moment.”
