Britney Spears’ ex Kevin Federline ‘would want answers’ if conservatorship ends on her terms
Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline has suggested he would want further “dialogue” if the star’s conservatorship is ended without evaluation.
The “Toxic” singer broke years of silence on 23 June when she spoke openly in court about her “abusive” conservatorship, which was put in place in 2008 and has for the most part given her father substantial control over her life.
Spears claimed in her testimony that her conservators won’t let her take out an IUD contraceptive device in her body, are stopping her from marrying her boyfriend and have forced her to take the powerful drug lithium.
After the shocking allegations came to light, Federline’s divorce attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan spoke on behalf of the DJ, who was married to Spears and is the father of her two children.
He told Page Six that Federline has concerns about medical decisions made under the conservatorship and their impact on Spears’ health.
As such, Kaplan said Federline was troubled at the idea of Spears’ regaining full autonomy over her life “without any expert evaluation”.
“I’ve seen it reported that Britney wants [the conservatorship] terminated without any expert evaluation,” Kaplan told Page Six.
“One thing that I can imagine will engender a further dialogue should it be terminated is that I know she had revealed in the statement she made that she had been put on lithium, and I think, as you can imagine, lithium is regarded as a very powerful psychotropic medication.”
Kaplan hoped that there was “some condition or basis” for a medical professional to have deemed using lithium as an “appropriate medical protocol”.
But, he stated, if Spears’ “conservatorship were to end, and even more so, be terminated without an exit evaluation”, then his client “would at least want to know what the conditions were that gave rise to her being prescribed that [lithium]”.
Kaplan added that Federline would “probably have to engender some dialogue along those lines” in the future if Spears’ conservatorship were to come to an end.
Kevin Federline only wants ‘the best’ for Britney Spears
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were married from 2004 to 2007 and have two teenage sons named Sean Preston, 15, and Jayden James, 14, of whom Federline has primary custody.
Kaplan also touched upon how important Spears’ health and happiness are when it comes to co-parenting. He told People that the “best thing” for their teenage sons “would be for their mom to be healthy and happy”.
“And if either of those things aren’t true, it doesn’t provide for the best setting for custody to be exercised,” Kaplan said.
He added Federline “respects Britney” and “only hopes the best for her” because “when the best for her is achieved, it’s the best for their kids”.
Multiple people have spoken out in support of Britney Spears regaining control over her life and the end of her conservatorship. Pop powerhouse Christina Aguilera declared that her old friend “deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life”.
Jamie Lynn Spears also broke her silence over her sister’s conservatorship in a video posted to her Instagram stories. She said that she is “proud” of her sister “for using her voice” and “for requesting new counsel”.
Music legend Cher even called on Spears’ father to “move over” and let the pop star “have her life”. Cher told the Press Association in April that she believes the “Oops!… I Did It Again” singer has “been paying long enough”, and it was time for her father to step down and free her from the conservatorship.
The next hearing in Britney Spears’ conservatorship case is scheduled for 14 July. Spears told the court during her initial testimony that she wanted an immediate end to her conservatorship and to regain full control over her life once again.
