We Are Lady Parts
This series follows an all-female Muslim punk band based in the UK that is told through the eyes of Amina Hussain, a geeky microbiology PhD student who becomes the group’s unlikely lead guitarist. The other members include queer drummer Ayesha, frontwoman Saira, bassist Bisma and the band’s manager Momtaz. It sees Amina get caught up between two different worlds – that of her strait-laced university friends and the anarchic and punk world of Lady Parts – all while trying to find love, in a story about identity, social media, romance and friendship. Since its release in the UK and US it’s received hugely positive reviews and fans can also stream the original music from the show.

Queer as Folk
This series isn’t quite ready to stream yet as it’s still in production, but Peacock’s reboot of Russell T Davies’ groundbreaking series Queer as Folk is coming soon. The American spin-off – which follows the previous US remake from 2000 – will explore the lives of a modern-day, diverse group of friends in New Orleans, Louisiana. The premise will focus on their lives being transformed in the wake of a still-unknown tragedy. It’s also been confirmed that non-binary actor Jesse James Keitel will star as a series regular, playing a trans, somewhat reformed party girl who is struggling to grow up. The release date is yet to be announced but watch this space and it’ll be another one to add to your watchlist.
Joe Exotic
Another show that is coming soon exclusively to the streaming service is Joe Exotic, a miniseries that will tell the story of the now-infamous exotic animal breeder who was at the centre of Netflix documentary, Tiger King. The documentary had audiences hooked across the globe after it dropped on the streaming service during lockdown in 2020 and now it’s time for the dramatised version. The cast will include SNL’s Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin and gay actor John Cameron Mitchell as the Tiger King himself. Currently things are being kept under wraps but it was confirmed that filming for the series began in July 2021.
One of Us Is Lying
Set to drop on Peacock before the end of the year is the television adaption of One of Us Is Lying. The series is based on the best-selling YA novel by Karen M McManus, which is set in a high school that is rocked by the mysterious death of a student during detention – and the rest become suspects. There are five central characters the brain, the criminal, the princess, the jock and Simon who runs an online gossip group – so think a murderous The Breakfast Club meets Gossip Girl. In the book one of the main characters is queer and it’s likely that this storyline will also feature in the upcoming series.

Saved by the Bell
The reimagined Saved by the Bell from Peacock follows a new group of Bayside High students from both overprivileged and working class families, with the latter having been transferred to the school as part of a plan by California Governor Zack Morris (remember him?). It mixes the classic hijinks of the original series alongside some much needed-representation, including trans actor Josie Totah who plays the queen bee of Bayside High. It also features original cast members Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Mario Lopez in main roles while Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Lark Voorhies and Ed Alonzo make guest appearances. So nostalgia mixed with queer representation, what more do you need?

The Real Housewives of the North Pole
Speaking of The Real Housewives, a festive-themed film is coming to the streaming platform in time for Christmas and it’s entitled The Real Housewives of the North Pole. It will star Beverly Hills housewife Kyle Richards and Besty Brandt in the two lead roles Rish and Diana, who are the “Christmas Queens” of North Pole, Vermont. In what could be lifted from an episode of the actual Real Housewives, the two have a nasty spat and ignite a town-wide feud just days before Christmas. Their argument catches the eye of a national magazine writer, who hopes to nab her first big story with an expose titled ‘Real Housewives of the North Pole’. A release date it yet to be announced by Peacock but it will likely arrive later this year.

Superstore
Superstore follows a group of employees working at Cloud 9, a fictional big-box store in St. Louis, Missouri and features a hugely diverse cast that is fronted by Ugly Betty star America Ferrera. One of the standout characters is Mateo Liwanag, a gay Filipino undocumented worker played by Nico Santos, who navigates his citizenship and relationship status throughout the show’s run. It recently finished up its sixth and final season, which incorporated the pandemic and it might be the only show that can get away with doing so.
