Eddie Redmayne’s ‘seductive’, ‘shattering’ Cabaret is the hottest West End ticket this Christmas

Everyone’s talking about the new West End revival of Cabaret at the moment after it opened to rave reviews at London’s Playhouse Theatre.

It stars It’s A Sin’s Omari Douglas as Cliff Bradshaw, in a very intimate and immersive version of the classic musical. It also stars Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley.

The show teases: “Welcome to the Kit Kat Club. Home to an intimate and electrifying new production of Cabaret.”

It’s performed ‘in the rounds’ for guests, who also receive a ‘club entry time’ for pre-show drinks at the Kit Kat Klub, designed to fit in with the motif of late 1920s Weimar-era Germany.

Redmayne stars as The Emcee, while Jessie Buckley takes on the iconic role of Sally Bowles in a celebratory show that also serves as a stark reminder of the rise of fascism.

Reviews have been as lavish as the performance, with particular praise heaped on Redmayne. The Telegraph said: “Eddie Redmayne dazzles in the kill-for-a-ticket theatrical triumph of 2021, While the Times said: “Sinister Redmayne and sumptuous set are a seductive combination.”

It’s based on the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood and features music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

It’s classic numbers include “Don’t Tell Mama”, “Money” and “Maybe This Time” as well as the title track.

The musical was famously adapted into a 1972 film starring Liza Minnelli in her first role singing on screen, which has since become an iconic performance.

The film adaptation went on to win eight Academy Awards including Best Actress for Liza and Best Director for Bob Fosse.

Omari recently starred in the West End revival of Constellations alongside Russell Tovey.

The duo gave a queer twist to the play which saw four pairings take on the lead roles throughout its run at London’s Vaudeville Theatre.

In our PinkNews review of the play we said that “Tovey and Douglas are brimming with charisma and chemistry” in “a landmark of queer theatre, a triumph in storytelling”.
