Queer teen Netflix drama Gameboys will delight LGBT+ gamers – and it just got nominated for an Emmy

Queer YouTube and Netflix series Gameboys has been nominated for an International Emmy award.
Originally launched on 22 May 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the Filipino series was shot remotely from the actors’ homes and proved a huge online success.
The full series was then added to Netflix.
It has now been nominated at the 2021 International Emmies for kids in the live action category.
Gameboys follows two live stream gamers who meet online and fall in love, their only interactions being gaming, messages and Zoom calls.
It’s the first Filipino series to ride the Asian “Boys Love” trend that’s popular across the continent.
Following the YouTube release, Gameboys has been watched around the world and hit over a million views after just two episodes.
It’s inclusion on Netflix has only increased its popularity.
“Gameboys is ultimately about love overcoming all boundaries – even physical ones set by our new reality,” says Executive Producer Jun Robles Lana.
“It is about two people who find each other at a time when they can only connect with one another virtually. I think that is what makes it so resonant with audiences around the world. We want to believe that you can still find love and companionship even in the middle of a pandemic.”
Ivan Payawal, the director of Gameboys, was shocked at the show’s international popularity.
“I knew we had a show we can all be proud of, but it’s just overwhelming to see fans from around the world commenting and posting about it – a lot of them even creating reaction videos to chronicle how much they loved our episodes!” he says.
Previously, it also won Best Web Series in the Indie Shorts Awards in Seoul.
Season 2 of Gameboys has been filmed but no release date has been announced.
