DC Comics’ new Superman just came out as bisexual: ‘Everyone deserves to see themselves in heroes’

Bisexual Superman Jon Kent

DC Comics has revealed that Jon Kent, the Superman of Earth and son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is bisexual.

When Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 hits the shelves of comic book shops on 9 November, fans will see the younger Kent strike up a friendship, which soon develops into a romance, with reporter Jay Nakamura.

Writer Tom Taylor said: “I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros share this idea.

“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more.

“Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”

Jon Kent took on the Superman of Earth mantle while his father is off world.

With his father having left Earth, the young Superman becomes “mentally and physically burnt out” after trying to rescue as many people as possible. Luckily, Nakamura is there to swoop in a save Kent.

Alongside Taylor’s writing, the comic book features art by artist John Timms.

Timms said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be working beside Tom on the Superman: Son of Kal-El series showing Jon Kent tackling his complex modern life, while also saving the world from its greatest threats, villains and menaces.”

Fans were similarly ecstatic.

DC chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee added: “We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms.

“We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois.

“They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”

Superman is the latest DC Comics bisexual icon after Robin came out in a Batman comic last month

Superman of Earth Jon Kent has become DC Comics’ latest bisexual icon, after Batman’s sidekick Tim Drake, aka Robin, came out as bisexual and scored himself a date all in one issue last month.

Batman: Urban Legends #6 saw Drake rescue his old friend, Bernard. But after an epic battle, Drake travelled to Bernard’s house.

Drake shared that he would like to “figure” out their relationship, and Bernard responded by bluntly asking the other man if he would like to go on a date.

“Yeah, I think I want that,” Drake answered.
