Demi Lovato has treated fans to a glimpse of their new buzzcut just in time for a ‘fresh start’ to the new year.

Lovato is not one to shy away from a daring hair transformation and has rocked mullets, pastel pink pixie cuts and striking bleached hair over the years. And let’s be honest, they’ve rocked them all.

The “Sorry Not Sorry” hitmaker showed off their dramatic new hair transformation in a short video posted to Instagram on Christmas Day (25 December). Lovato credited photographer and director Angelo Kritikos for shooting the video in the caption, adding the hashtag “#freshstart”.

Lovato complemented their new look with bold brows, smokey eyeshadow and dramatic gold earrings.

So it seems this is their 2022 look, and it certainly serves up the best New Year’s Eve inspiration.

Actor Valerie Bertinelli commented that Lovato looked “stunning”.

Carly Sutherland Lawrence, who stars on season two of Netflix reality show Too Hot to Handle, described Lovato’s new look as “gorgeous”.

Celebrity aesthetician and skincare expert Renee Rouleau commented: “There they are in all their fierceness!”

Demi Lovato’s new look comes months after the “Heart Attack” singer came out publicly as non-binary in May, updating their pronouns.

Lovato told fans in a heartfelt video on social media that they had been “doing some healing and self-reflective work” in the past year.

The singer explained they/them pronouns captured the “fluidity I feel in my gender expression” and “allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I know I am and still am discovering”.

During a virtual appearance at the 19th Represents Summit in August, Lovato shared that opening up about their gender was vital to their “healing process”.

“Being non-binary, what that means is that I’m so much more than the binary of man and woman,” Lovato explained.

“And that we are all so much more if we allow ourselves the ability to look within ourselves and challenge that binary that we’ve grown up living in.”

In March, before they came out as non-binary, Lovato revealed in an interview with Glamour that they used their hair to express their queer identity.

They added the end goal was to completely shave their head. Needless to say, Lovato accomplished their goal.

“When I started getting older, I started realising how queer I really am,” Lovato explained. “This past year I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, This is a huge sign.”

They continued: “I thought I was going to spend my life with someone.

“Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”
