Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira addresses Kat ‘mystery’ as fans ask: ‘What the f**k was that?’

Euphoria‘s Barbie Ferreira has addressed Kat’s befuddling storyline – or lack of – this season, as fans complain she isn’t being given time to shine.

Warning: spoilers ahead season two, episode six of Euphoria.

Katherine “Kat” Hernandez (Barbie Ferreira) has been a fan-favourite for Euphoria fans since the show’s first season when she transitioned from a body-conscious teen to sexually awakened badass.

However, fans have noticed Kat fade quite a bit into the background in season two. Aside from a powerful self-love fantasy in episode two, Kat has appeared only sporadically. Episode five saw Kat and her boyfriend Ethan (Austin Abrams) finally get some more screen time –  but it wasn’t what fans were hoping for.

In the short scene, Kat told Ethan claimed that she has a “terminal brain disorder”, and she explained to him that her alleged diagnosis means that they can’t be a couple anymore.

When Ethan questioned her, Kat claimed that he was manipulating and ‘gaslighting’ her into breaking up with him. Ethan saw through it, and decided it was time to end the relationship.

The interaction left fans with mixed emotions.

Other fans were (for good reason) upset that Kat’s only major storyline this season had ended in something so uncharacteristic.

Kat’s perceived absence comes amid rumours of a real-life feud between Barbie Ferreira and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.

Ferreira briefly touched upon Kat’s absence in a joint interview for The Cut with other Euphoria stars, saying the character’s “journey” is a “little more internal and a little mysterious to the audience.

“She is secretly going through a lot of existential crises,” Ferreira said.

“She loses her marbles a little bit — just like everyone else in this season.

“The theme is everyone’s gone a little crazy.”

She did not comment on the rumours that she argued with Levinson.
