Everything we know about Euphoria season three after heartbreaking finale

Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer) catch up in their high school's theatre in the finale of Euphoria's second season

Euphoria season three can’t come soon enough – but fans fear there’ll be a lengthy wait.

The following contains mild spoilers about Euphoria’s second season finale.

Fans are still reeling after the highly-anticipated finale, which finally confirmed Fezco’s fate (Angus Cloud) and how Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and co reacted to Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) play.

The finale also saw Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer) finally talk after the intervention that forced Rue to get clean. But after the final scene of the play, Rue walked out of the theatre and seemingly left their relationship behind – for now.

With so many threads left hanging, fans are desperate to know when Euphoria season three will air.

HBO confirmed at the beginning of February that the drama would be coming back for a third season.

Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, thanked the show’s cast and crew for taking the show to “extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form”, all while “maintaining its heart”.

“We couldn’t be more honoured to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season 3,” Orsi said.

According to HBO, the first episode of season two was the “most viewed episode of a HBO series ever on HBO Max, currently with more than 14 million viewers across platforms”.

There’s speculation on Twitter that the show won’t return until 2024 – but for now, there’s no confirmation on when Euphoria season three will land. There was a two-and-a-half year gap in between the first and second seasons (with two bridge episodes tiding fans over) – but this was due to the pandemic.

What do we know about Euphoria season three’s plot?

It’s not entirely clear who will be returning for Euphoria season three. But Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO, confirmed to TV Line that Zendaya will be reprising her role, adding it’s “hard to imagine doing [the] show without her”.

It’s also a safe bet that much of the main cast of characters – including Schafer, Apatow, Sweeney, Eric Dane, Nika King, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira and Jacob Elordi – will get some air time in the next season.

It’s difficult to tell what could happen in the third season as Euphoria is well-known for the compelling twists and turns in its various storylines. But several of the show’s stars have teased a few plot points to tide fans over.

Apatow told Entertainment Weekly that she hoped that season three would explore the relationship between her character Lexi and Cloud’s Fez. She said it was “very refreshing” to see a relationship that “feels so like innocent and sweet”.

“And I think in contrast to a lot of the things that happen on the show that are so extreme, it definitely stands out,” Apatow said. “But I love working with Angus.”

She continued: “I think Angus is such a great actor, and we just have so much fun working together.

“So for selfish reasons, I hope we get to do more scenes together because it’s fun.”

Chloe Cherry, who plays Faye, told Variety that she hoped her character grows closer to Rue in Euphoria season three as the two “vibe” with each other.

“I think Faye has a story of addiction to tell as Rue does; even though it’s different, I think that they could learn something from each other,” she said. “I also think Rue is a non-judgmental character, and I think that is all Faye needs.”

Cherry added: “I think if they got closer, they would get along because they have these shared experiences and they are both chill girls in spite of it.”
