Succession writer pushed for major character to be gay and thinks Roman is ‘fluid and pan’

A writer for hit HBO drama series Succession has revealed that she pushed for cousin Greg to come out as gay.
Speaking on the podcast Homo Sapiens, Succession writer Georgia Pritchard revealed that while awkward outsider Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) isn’t “closeted”, there were conversations about him being gay.
“It’s interesting how characters take on a life of their own,” she said on the podcast.
“I had sort of advocated for Greg to be gay, until last season he hadn’t really done anything with anyone.”
She added that in Succession, the Roy family moves “in a circle where I think anything goes”.
“I don’t think anyone’s closeted or not gonna do what they want to do,” she explained, noting that Roman Roy (Keiran Culkin) in particular “feels a bit fluid and pan”.
Some Succession fans have long shipped Greg and Tom (Matthew McFayden), whose relationship veers from intense to scathing.
So much is their chemistry that one fan reimagined the show as a gay rom-com about the pair.
YouTuber Liminal proved that the unique dynamic between Greg and Tom provides more than enough content to create a truly intriguing romantic comedy, reminding viewers of the intimate conversations and emotionally-charged interactions that the pair have shared over the past three seasons.
While it’s unlikely viewers will see a “Grom” (Greg and Tom) romance any time soon, HBO has confirmed that Succession will return for a fourth season.
Digital Spy reported that although a release date has not yet been announced, series four was “confirmed days before the launch of the new season”.
Succession seasons one to three are available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
