Jinkx Monsoon makes sparkling return to London’s West End with an absurdly fun night
Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are back with Together Again, Again.
It’s the end of the 21st century. The sun has exploded, aliens have colonised Earth, season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race is still (we presume) going. “Internationally tolerated chanteuse” Jinkx Monsoon and her dashing musical partner Major Scales are reuniting for one last tour – and we’re all invited.
That’s the basic conceit behind Together Again, Again, and yes, it’s entirely absurd. But that’s the beauty of what Jink Monsoon does. Since winning season five of Drag Race, the Seattle queen has cemented herself as a brilliant vaudeville performer – campy, clever, irreverent, and with a bloody good set of pipes. It’s worlds away from the big, flashy drag shows we’ve become accustomed to – here, the focus is on comedy, stage presence and talent, not gimmicks looks (though certainly, there are looks).
On the opening night of the show’s residency at the Leicester Square theatre, does every joke land? No. Is it as slick as it could be? Again, no. But frankly, when you’re as talented and charismatic as Jinkx Monsoon, it doesn’t really matter. In fact, some of the biggest laughs of the night come when she seemingly goes off-script, breaking the fourth wall with a wry quip to the audience, before jumping straight back into it. Propelling the show is the chemistry she shares with Major Scales, who’s perfectly pitched as the reluctant second-fiddle to Jinkx’s past-it diva.
Filthy, raucous, at times stupid (in the best way), it’s a cracking night out.
