Rapper Lil Uzi Vert quietly changes pronouns to they/them

Rapper Lil Uzi Vert has quietly updated the pronouns on their Instagram profile to they/them.
Fans noticed the change on Sunday (17 July), though Lil Uzi Vert had not publicly addressed the change at time of writing.
Though many began describing the 26-year-old rapper as non-binary, using gender-neutral pronouns and being non-binary are not one and the same. Not all people who use they/them pronouns are non-binary, and not all non-binary people use they/them pronouns.

Many fans shared their support for the rapper. However, many others were quick to note that Lil Uzi Vert has previously been accused of transphobia. Lyrics on their 2019 track “That’s a Rack” – “check my DMs found out she was a man / I can’t DM never ever again” – were singled out in particular.
One Twitter user said: “Man, why did Lil Uzi Vert gotta say some transphobic s**t on ‘That’s a Rack’… We were all rooting for you, but I can’t be down with that.”
The rapper was also convicted on domestic assault charges in February after their ex-girlfriend Brittany Byrd alleged that they assaulted her and threatened her with a firearm.
Pitchfork reported that they pled no contest to one count of felony assault with a firearm and one count of misdemeanour injury.
They were sentenced to three years of formal probation, one year of treatment for mental health and substance abuse, and 52 weeks of domestic violence counselling. The rapper must also pay restitution and comply with a 10-year criminal protective order.
The rapper’s change in pronouns comes just says after they announced their next EP, titled Red & White, which does not yet have a release date.
