Whoopi Goldberg says God would support abortion rights during fiery TV debate
Whoopi Goldberg proclaimed that “God doesn’t make mistakes” as a pro-choice abortion argument with conservative TV personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
During Wednesday’s (3 August) episode of US talk show The View, Goldberg hit back against Hasselbeck’s religious anti-abortion view with her own take on God.
The debate came after Kansas voted to keep abortion legal, stopping lawmakers from severely restricting abortion rights in the state. This prompted a new wave of outrage among anti-abortion campaigners.
During the show Hasselback said: “I believe our creator assigns value to life and that those lives have a plan and purpose for them designed by god that are not limited to the circumstances of conception nor the situations they are born into.”

Defending her pro-choice stance, Goldberg told Hasselbeck: “As you know, God doesn’t make mistakes. God made us smart enough to know when it wasn’t going to work for us. That’s the beauty of giving us freedom of choice.”
When Hasselback argued that women should be educated and pursue other options outside of abortion, Goldberg also had a response for that:
“I also know that God made me smart enough to know that if there are alternatives out there that can work for me, I will investigate them. I also know God said, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ I will not make that decision for anybody.”
Whoopi Goldberg has been a regular defender of women and LGBTQ+ rights. Just two weeks ago she destroyed a Republican congressman who argued against the same-sex marriage bill.
She sassily told him: “I know you don’t really pay attention to much, but I will say that what the Democrats seem to be running on is also protecting everyone’s rights regardless of whoever you love.
“They’re trying to make sure that the rights you are so easily able to give away, we’re trying to hold on and say, actually, you can’t do that.”
