She has previously appeared in Netflix’s queer musical The Prom and Broadway shows including Hamilton, Bring It On, Company and Summer: The Donna Musical.
But perhaps her biggest breakthrough role was in 2021’s adaption of West Side Story, which saw her received multiple major awards.
DeBose won the 2022 Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards for her performance as Anita.
She made history by becoming the first openly queer woman of colour to win an acting Oscar for her performance in Stephen Spielberg-directed film.
“What is this?” an emotional Ariana DeBose said on stage at the Dolby Theatre. “You know what, now you see why Anita says, ‘I want to be in America,’ because even in this weary world that we live in, dreams do come true, and that’s a really heartening thing right now.”
Closing out her speech, she said: “Lastly, imagine this little girl in the back seat of a white Ford Focus, look into her eyes, you see an openly queer woman of colour, an Afro-Latina, who found her strength in life through art, and that’s what I believe we’re here to celebrate.
“So to anybody who’s ever questioned your identity, ever, ever, ever, or you find yourself living in the grey spaces, I promise you this, there is indeed a place for us.”
Following her historic win, DeBose was also one of several LGBTQ+ icons in Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people of 2022.
She was named alongside the likes of Apple CEO, Tim Cook and US footballer Megan Rapinoe on the annual list.
