JoJo Siwa recalls ‘life changing’ phone call from Elton John after coming out
Elton John gave JoJo Siwa a ‘life-changing’ phone call after she publicly came out a queer, the teen star has revealed in a heartwarming story.
The 19-year-old singer, dancer and reality sensation reportedly had an in-depth conversation with the Rocket Man singer after coming out in 2021.
“Hello, JoJo, darling. This is Elton,” the singer reportedly said to Siwa. “I’m overjoyed that you’ve joined our beautiful community.”
Adding: “At 17, you were able to do something that took people of my generation decades to do. Not only are you living your truth, you’re a shining example to young people the world over and their families, by showing that love is love and people are people.”
Elton is said to have then went on to compliment Siwa’s “fantastic style”, urging her to “keep giving us the full JoJo, unfiltered, full of joy”.
The wonderful moment has stuck with an understandably starstruck Siwa, who joked that upon getting the call, she yelled: “Mum, get the camera out, it’s Elton John!”
The two first met backstage during one of Elton’s concerts, where the internet sensation said she got to “talk to him for 45 minutes”.
Siwa said she credits Elton and many other LGBTQ+ stars for helping her on her own journey of self-discovery.
“To see the way that the world accepted Elton John for who he was, Freddie Mercury for who he was. All of those people who came before me in the gay community made me feel like, ‘oh, it’s going to be OK!’. Those people are who they are, people know them and people love them.”
Responding to an Instagram post Elton made at the time, Siwa said his message “made [[her] life”.
“Thank you so much for being the sweetest and most inspiring person ever.”
Elton John’s final US tour goes out with a bang
Elton recreated some of his most iconic moments in his final-ever US show, which featured Dua Lipa, well-wishes from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and the star’s fabulous theatrics we’ve come to know and love.
The “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” saw Elton recreated his iconic 1975 bejewelled baseball uniform, for songs including Tiny Dancer and Your Song.
In a message of appreciation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex thanked Elton for “entertaining everybody for so many decades”.
“Thank you for being the friend that you were to my mum. Thank you for being our friend, thank you for being a friend to our kids and thank you for entertaining people right around the world.”
