More than 100 people complain to police about “gay cure” MP
A meeting in Belfast organised by gay advocacy group the Coalition on Sexual Orientation (CoSo) earlier this week was told than more than 100 complaints have been lodged with police about Iris Robinson.
The MP and MLA has refused to apologise for an interview on Radio Ulster earlier this month when she claimed that homosexuality is disgusting, loathsome, nauseating, wicked and vile and that gay people can be “cured.”
Members of the LGBT community were joined by church leaders, political party members, and concerned members of the public at the public meeting, which was attended by more than 100 people.
The meeting also learned that a number of complaints that have been made to the General Medical Council about the activities of Dr Paul Miller, a psychiatrist who claims to have ‘turned around’ the sexual orientation of some gay people.
Dr Miller serves as one of two senior health advisors to Mrs Robinson in her capacity as chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Health Committee.
During her radio interview Mrs Robinson offered to put gay people in touch with Dr Miller.
The Northern Ireland Assembly’s Commissioner for Standards has been asked to investigate Mrs Robinson’s comments.
She claims she was merely proclaiming the word of God and is the victim of a witch hunt.
Mrs Robinson, MP and MLA for Strangford, is married to First Minister Peter Robinson.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesperson told PinkNews.co.uk that an investigation is underway but would not comment on the number of complaints, which she said was normal procedure.
It is thought she is being investigated for a possible breach of the Public Order Act which deals with threatening behaviour and insulting words.
