Obama now prepared to endorse LGBT equality law
Barack Obama has endorsed the 2015 Equality Act.
Last month the President’s press secretary, Josh Earnest, was asked if the White House would endorse the bill.
Earnest told the White House press pool “I’m not prepared to say that yet. This is a piece of legislation that the White House does continue to review.
“There’s significant consequences to this bill going into effect.”
But now, according to a report in the Washington Post, Earnest has said that the review is complete and the White House will be endorsing the new equality Bill.
The Equality Act of 2015 will amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act so that it also includes anti-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity on top of the current protections for race, religion, and sex.
Earnest announced on Tuesday “Upon that review it is now clear that the administration strongly supports the Equality Act,
“That bill is historic legislation that would advance the cause of equality for millions of Americans.”
Earlier this week Obama was named Ally Of The Year in Out magazine, and became the first US President to pose for the cover of an LGBT magazine.
