Politician who said women are too stupid for equal pay has been suspended without pay
A politician who claimed women are too “small and weak” for equal pay has been suspended from his job.
Janusz Korwin-Mikke, a member of the European Parliament from Poland, made the comments in the European Parliament, and then again on Good Morning Britain with Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan.
Korwin-Mikke will be suspended from parliamentary activities for 10 days, forfeit his politicians’ daily subsistence allowance for 30 days and be banned from representing the legislature for a year, the parliament’s president Antonio Tajani said.
Mr Tajani said he “will not tolerate such behaviour” and added that “by offending all women, [Mr Korwin-Mikke] displayed contempt for our most fundamental values”.
It comes after the Polish MEP, who stands for election under a party name made from his own initials, slammed women’s rights to equal pay in a series of interviews.
He previously told the European Parliament that women should earn less than men, “because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent, and they must earn less! That’s all”.
The comments drew gasps in the chamber, and another MEP, Iratxe Garcia Perez, from Spain, told him: “Look, according to your theory, I should not have the right to be here, as a member of this parliament.”
The Socialist Workers’ Party politician continued: “And I know it hurts you, I know it hurts and worries you, that today women can sit in this house and represent European citizens with the same rights as you.
“I am here to defend all European women from men like you.”
Piers Morgan slammed the anti-women politician as the “stupid one” in a live interview.
The TV host asked him: “Don’t you understand that when you are doing that, you are showing the world that you are a horrendous, sexist pig?”
Mr Korwin-Mikke has attracted notoriety for previously claiming women are too dumb to vote.
He has also said that there is no written proof that Adolf Hitler was aware of the Holocaust and said there are “very subtle” differences between rape and consensual sex.
Korwin-Mikke, who was invited to the funeral of Margaret Thatcher, is also a dedicated anti-LGBT campaigner, arguing strongly against same-sex marriages and in favour of ‘traditional marriages’.
In fact, he’s such a fan of traditional marriages, that he’s had three of them.
